Municipal campaign results in BC

Thanks to your support we can celebrate that there are now 25 municipalities that have implemented some action on bottled water in British Columbia!
Anmore, Armstrong, Belcarra, Burnaby, Central Okanagan Regional District Board, City of Northern Vancouver, Dawson Creek, Delta, District of Saanich, District of West Vancouver, Gibsons, Golden, Kelowna, Kitimat, Metro Vancouver, Nanaimo, Nelson, Pitt Meadows, Port Alberni, Port Moody, Vancouver, Victoria, Village of Keremeos, Whistler, White Rock
Here are the municipal responses to our Getting Off the Bottle campaign to date.
- June 1, 2009 The City of Victoria has taken seriously the resolution adopted at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention in March 2009 by phasing out the purchase of bottled water for catering events in City Hall.
- June 9, 2009 The City of Burnaby has directed staff to take a closer look what is required to phase out bottled water in all City’s facilities.
- June 9, 2009 Ucluelet Council received our correspondence on Council Agenda.
- June 11, 2009 City of Abbotsford received correspondence on Council Agenda.
- June 11, 2009 Sunshine Coast Regional District directed staff to request a meeting with Toxic Free Canada and Polaris Institute to discuss the issue of local management of watersheds.
- June 15, 2009 City of Kelowna is recommending that council direct city staff to prepare a report on the implications of either banning or phasing-out bottled water at city owned facilities.
- June 15, 2009 City of Castlegar and the Corporation of the Township of Esquimalt received correspondence on Council Agenda.
- June 16, 2009 Whistler Council passed a resolution directing that Toxic Free Canada’s package be referred to staff to respond to Council with a report.
- June 16, 2009 Town of Golden referred the item on bottled water a Committee of the Whole meeting for further discussion.
- June 16, 2009 District of Clearwater Municipal Council received correspondence on agenda.
- June 18, 2009 Armstrong Council passed a resolution to phase out the sale and purchase of bottled water at their own facilities where appropriate and where potable water is available.
- June 22, 2009 City of Vernon received correspondence on agenda.
- June 26, 2009 District of West Vancouver has referred our concerns to District staff, Council and the District’s Climate Action Working Group for review and consideration.
- June 24, 2009 Kitimat Council voted unanimously in favour of referring the water bottle issue to the advisory recreation commission for review and recommendation.
- July 13, 2009 City of North Vancouver Council voted to phase out plastic water bottle containers in municipal buildings. The city is calling on the North Shore Recreation Commission, North Shore Neighbourhood House, the North Shore Office of Cultural Affairs, Capilano University and North Vancouver school district to follow suit.
